Mother’s Day is Almost Here!

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and you still haven’t gotten anything for mom? And what do you think she would have to say about that? Hm? Well let’s just hope she doesn’t find out. Lucky for you there is still time! Here at the nursery we have hundreds of plants, garden decor, and many more items that mom will love! Big, beautiful florist hydrangeas make great houseplants and can be planted outdoors when the bloom finishes. And if she has already planted every flower, bush, or tree you can think of, then get her a statue or fountain to complete her garden! Gift cards are also a great way to let mom pick out exactly what she wants, but you had better put it in a really sweet Hallmark card! Whatever you decide to get your mom for Mother’s Day this year, hurry in soon! Because you know you mom would tell you “Never put off until tomorrow what could be done today.”!

We’ve got some delicious
Georgia grown corn in at the market! Super sweet white and bi-color corn is picked fresh and shipped out immediately, and these early ears are some of the first out of the region this year! Available, on-the-cob, un-shucked, and creamed.

We’ve received a great deal on some mixed containers here at Andy’s recently, and now we are passing the savings onto you! Because these containers are

planted before we purchase them, they are already filled in and looking beautiful! Another great advantage is that they are actually more affordable than if you were to plant the container yourself! These plant mixes are specifically chosen to look amazing together as they grow. Petunias spill over the edge, while calibrachoa mounds into a mass of blooms and spike grass waves lazily overhead. These containers are a great value and make excellent gifts for mother’s day.

Use IMAGE on tough to kill weeds

In order to maintain a healthy, beautiful lawn this summer you need to start thinking about weed control now. While pre-emergents can be the best defense, there are some varieties of weeds that are either not affected by this treatment, or are already established at the time of application. For this situation we generally recommend IMAGE weed killer, which controls frustrating plants like wild onion and nutsedge. In some cases multiple applications may be needed, however IMAGE is the most effective way to treat many types of hardy established weeds.

Farm Markets Open!

Both our Vestavia Farm Market on Rocky Ridge Road and our Hoover location on Highway 150 are now open for the 2012 season. A few of Alabama’s crops are available at this time and we will continue to bring you the most local foods available as the season progresses. For now, Florida is producing some delicious strawberries and citrus. Their tender, hand-picked strawberries are second only to those from Chilton County. Honey Tangerines can be peeled in seconds and truly live up to the sweetness implied by their name. Minneolas are an interesting cross-breed of an orange and grapefruit that is perfect for cooking and has a flavor all its own. Of course we are fully stocked with all the vegetables and fruits you could need, but we will also be carrying new products and items this season! Come by soon to see our crisp new look and enjoy the freshest produce available!

Did You Know?
We sell our bales of pine straw at $4.99 each, and we often receive inquiries as to why we charge this price when most of our competition only charges $3.99. The answer is found in the size and unit price of the pine straw bales. Bales sold at big box stores measure 13″x14″x26″ inches resulting in 4700 cubic inches. Our bales measure 14″x16″x30″ at 6700 cubic inches, meaning they are about 30% larger and about 10% cheaper than the competition. That means that for every ten bales you purchase you save $5 over the big box stores!

February Lawn ApplicationAndy Burris

This month’s lawn application is gypsum, a granular mineral that can be applied in almost any situation. Gypsum is useful for aerating heavily compacted soils as well as lowering the overall acidity. It is also an excellent source of calcium and sulfur. Because it does not contain any fertilizer or other harsh chemicals, it is almost impossible to over-apply or burn your lawn with this product. Gypsum is often utilized in soggy areas or were large amounts of clay are present.

Bonus Bucks can be Redeemed Now!

Come in anytime before February 11th, 2012 to redeem your earned bonus bucks for up to HALF OFF your entire purchase. These coupons can be used towards absolutely anything at our Vestavia nursery. This includes fountains, trees, decorations, fertilizers, and even bulk products! And if don’t plan on doing any more planting before Spring or can’t think of anything you may need, remember now is a great time to start fighting Summer weeds with pre-emergents!

It’s also time to put down this season’s pre-emergent. Weed fighting products are divided into two categories: Post-emergents and Pre-emergents. Post-emergents fight weeds by killing them on the spot and usually employ stronger chemicals. The mush easier, safer, and more aesthetic option is to control weeds with a pre-emergent which stops them from ever sprouting in the first place. This month’s lawn treatment stops dozens of varieties of weeds, including crabgrass, before they ever become a problem in the spring. Apply now to save time and effort later!

We hope everyone’s New Year is getting off to a great start this year! Now that the holiday season is over, many of you probably have poinsettias sitting around the house that are looking a little less than festive. Instead of throwing them away, bring them to us instead to get a free primrose! Bring in any poinsettia, in any condition, purchased from any store to receive a free primrose! We will only be accepting trade-ins from January 3-8 so make sure you come by soon!

Primroses are great for indoor winter and early spring color and are known for their bright, vibrant hues. The name primrose actually means “first rose” because it is one of the first flowering plants of spring. They like shady, moist conditions with good drainage.

Between January 3-8 bring in ANY poinsettia purchased from ANY store to receive a free primrose!
